Recent Books I recommend

Most of the time I have at least one book running on my mp3 player.  I have two of the little cheap things and sometimes have a book I am listening to on each.  It sure makes picking and stemming beans go faster.

Wild:  From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed is about hiking  the Pacific Crest Trail alone.  Cheryl Strayed tells of her fears, joys, never ending sore feet and quest to find herself.  Read it and you will be on the trail it is so well written.  Excellent story that has been chosen best nonfiction book of the year by NPR and Entertainment Weekly among others.  I see it is being made into a movie with Ms. Strayed being played by Reese Witherspoon.

The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe    Will Schwalbe’s mother, Mary Anne Schwalbe is diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer at the beginning of the book.  She and her son Will form an informal book club.  It is not in the least sad, (although I am not quite finished and I am certain there is sadness ahead) it is actually uplifting and full of life lessons centered around the books they read and reread.  It is a memoir of family, love, learning about self for both and dignity for Mary Anne.

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker is fictional account of  10 year-old Julia coping with not only moving beyond childhood into becoming a young lady but also with the world slowing its rotation.  The reason for the “slowing” is never really explained but the results are written in detail.  I am not sure how the author researched before writing the book, but her interpretations are realistic.   I cannot tell any of this story without ruining the book but it was a excellent story.

Finally, The Arkansas River by Jory Sherman.  This is Book 6 of the River West series.  I have enjoyed reading the books in this series because they are easy reads, good stories and historically sound.  The setting is a very early Colorado Springs and Pueblo Colorado.  The struggles were many, including those with the Ute.  Enjoyed this book a lot and look forward to reading all in the series.

Bagworm monster

This ugly, disgusting thing turned up on my office window this morning. When I looked at this picture, I thought it could be something from a horror movie.

We will be out early tomorrow morning with the spray. Because, now that I look a little closer, this is not the only one!

I’m gearing up

It all started with the rain.

There wasn’t a thing to write about.  I think we had at least a week of cloudy, rainy weather.  No complaints, we need the moisture.  But there is only so much to say about rain.  So, obviously,  I didn’t say anything.

Then, we were excited to see sun and Mike-e (as in Wall-e) pull in.

Kay and Lynn come back to their native Kansas each year from their retirement home in Arizona.  They lived in Topeka for almost all of their married life so they have other friends to visit.  However, they always spend one week with us.  Our tradition is lots of good food, good conversation and  Joker each night.

Kay and Lynn are back to their city campground.  We are completing several projects, one of which is to get a few things updated on the truck.

But, now I am gearing up to get back into the habit of blogging.  I miss it.  So, if you are reading this, thank you for staying with me.
