Pigs in the back yard

It was a matter of time. The pig population is expanding out of the valley.

March 1st Butterfly

I posted this picture yesterday hoping someone would help me out with an identification. I was unable to find anything in my information or on the internet mainly because I falsely thought it was a moth. Chip, our friend, neighbor, KU prof, and head of Monarch Watch (see left) came through. He spotted one the day before also.

This is a Gray Comma (Polygonia progne). The adults overwinter. The information stated the winter form emerges from hibernation in April and May. It would seem the one I capured in this picture is a bit early.

Interestingly enough, according to the linked information, Kansas does not have a large coverage. As a matter of fact, I had to get a magnifing glass to make sure our county was shaded. The habitat is along gravel roads, in wooded areas by streams--exactly where this little guy was warming in the sun of an 80 degree March 1st day.

This N' That

Dan had a break between jobs so he caught up on some outdoor jobs. He has the garden looking wonderful. The potatoes are going in St Patrick's Day. Sometimes I wait and plant them a little later to avoid the inevitable late freeze. I'm taking my chances this year.

I enjoy the new little calves making their entrance on the route. Last week on Thursday, the momma just had her baby and was cleaning her up. On Friday, they were still at the far end of the pasture away from the herd. On Saturday, the momma must have felt more comfortable as they were back with the herd. The little black calf has perfect white markings, I'll try for a picture this week.

We took off for Overbrook and Conrad's Bar & Grill after work. They have steaks on Monday night. I am not a vegetarian, but only eat beef one or two times a week. I usually don't miss it, but a good steak now and then can't be beat.

I have a walking program set up to start March 1st. Time to kick it in. I need to get back into exercising. I am convinced it is the fountain of youth.
