All wind no rain on Mother’s Day

I woke up last night around 1:30 AM to wind—strong wind.  I hit the weather radio and it said the same thing as when we went to bed.  There was a possibility of strong storms in our area.  I looked at the weather map on the phone charging by the bed.  I could see we were “kind of” in the storm area.  So, I didn’t think there was too much of a worry.

The wind was relentless.  We have a very large window by our bed.  I always worry a bit about that window in severe weather.  But, what I heard was a crack in front of the house.  I thought, “there goes our lawn chairs from the west porch.”  The thought was that one of them might have hit the barn.

This morning, sadly, we found the source of the crack.

This tree had already taken a hit from lightening several years ago.  Silver Maples aren’t known to be strong trees and maybe we should have expected this.  Still, I’m sad to have lost one of our original 37 plus-year-old trees.  It took an original red bud with it as well.

One the bright side, I got a beautiful Mother’s Day card from Colorado and am eating with our local family today!  It will be a great day.
