Landon Nature Trail (rails to trails)

IMG_1988

Shhh, don’t tell anyone about this great biking trail. When finished, the Landon Nature Trail will run within five miles of our home.

Well, it’s too late.  Everyone in the area is aware of it. This rails to trails has had a hard go of it in Shawnee County.  As is often the case, there was/is landowner dissent.  People thought the abandoned railroad  would be their land, not have bicycle riders and/or horseback riders going past their homes—often their private back side.

Even though Dan and I were willing to help with the cleanup, I could not because many miles of it runs through my former mail route.  I did not feel I wanted to upset customers and my boss agreed.

However, now fully retired, we are thinking of pitching in when they have a work day.  I think the landowners will find people who ride these trails are interested in maintaining a good relationship.  I venture to say, most landowners won’t even know when people are out there.

Copy of IMG_1983   I didn’t crop this picture so it’s a little hard to see details.  There is a stream down on the left side.  You can see how shaded it is in the summer.  One note of caution, the bugs were out strong—bug spray is a must.

We rode a little over an hour—very leisurely.  I believe this will be a real plumb if or when they made it all the way to Overbrook…and by our house.

I'm sure if I had property near the path, I'd be against it. I don't blame them. But as a person that enjoys walking trails like these in our area, it's a wonderful thing to find a maintained path you can go walk or bike on. There are very few places that aren't posted left that we can get out and enjoy the outdoors.
