Sunday afternoon shower in the forecast

Bridal showers supposedly began in the United States in 1890. The name originated in Grand Rapids, Michigan according to a site on Google. I wonder if there is a sign outside the city stating this unusual claim to fame. I doubt it.

A noble beginning, friends gathered to shower gifts on a poor girl for her dowry. It is still a way for a bride to accumulate household necessities.

Kim and I are hosting a bridal shower for Tara, Dan’s brother’s daughter. It has been fun. Lots of phone calls, ideas thrown in and out. Plans, then change of plans. It is tomorrow and I think we are ready. It is at Kim’s house.

The menu includes cheesecake, other sweets, a coffee bar and punch. We started out heavier with meat, salads and beer. Then moved to deserts with wine. Finally, we decided no liquor, just coffee. The guest list is mixed, young and elder.

I am dipping strawberries in the morning. Dan found beautiful berries at Sam’s. The actual dipping is easy—so is tasting them. I must resist, as there will be over 20 guests.

Traditionally there is at least one game. Depending on the crowd, these can be fun. Since there will be over 20 guests, we are limiting the game to telling the bride about a recipe which we encouraged the guests to bring by enclosing a recipe card in the invitation.

Check tomorrow evening for a picture of the beautiful bride.

Summertime and the Livn' is easy

Ten reasons I like summer:

1. Evening drives with windows down and not the least bit chilly

2. Night sounds including frogs, crickets, katydids, young coyotes testing their vocal cords and soon cicadas.

3. Hanging clothes on the line and their stiff scratchy feel

4. Shorts and t shirts

5. Fresh from the garden corn on the cob and tomatoes

6. Homemade ice cream

7. Road trips and camping

8. Putting ice in drinks served hot in the winter

9. Sights and smells of farm harvests

10. Light mail (meaning less mail)

Of course there are more reasons. Feel free to add to this list.

Mondays are a headache

...some Mondays more of a problem than others.

When I click on the dictionary symbol in my tool bar, select Thesaurus and type in headache, there are six synonyms: annoyance, bother, bore, nuisance and problem in addition to pain, the traditional meaning as far as I am concerned.

You might assume I mean annoyance. For many, Mondays are a headache. It’s back to the grind. It’s looking at five days until another chance to sleep in or dig into a project.

We have a friend who would get physically sick on Sunday night thinking about Monday. He finally changed jobs. Another friend had the option, so she works Saturday and takes Monday off. She loves it.

Fortunately, I like my job and my headache on Monday has nothing to do with it or my friends at the office.

I am always sipping on iced tea or diet Coke on the weekends. Dan and my coffee chat on Saturday and Sunday may drag on to several cups.

Most likely the simple explanation is the Monday headaches are caffeine withdrawal.
