Standing proud

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Beautiful flowers were all around the route today. The damp rainy weather only enhanced their loveliness in their carefully constructed flowerbeds. This single jonquil, especially caught my attention.

How did it grow there all by itself. Were there others choked out by the grass? Did someone plant bulbs and thought this one was dead and threw it out? Did a squirrel think it was a nut and transplant it out in the tree line? For whatever reason this little flower is standing proud.

What is News?

This question has been on my mind most of the day. I keep a notepad in my mail truck to jot topics for blog posts or things to do when I get home. I kept the pad handy today and made several notes on the topic.

The first thought was, "News is what people need to know to effectively live their lives." That one was rejected somewhere around noon. I listen or read a lot of news for no good reason. And, what about the little pieces of news you receive with questions like, "How was your day?" I don't think that information has too much effect on my life other than keeping me informed on how those close to me are doing.

The second is, "News is communication with or about each other and the world in which we live." I think this one is OK. It seems a bit general. I either leave it there or I expand to several paragraphs and I don't think that is what I want to do with the question. I keep trying to put the word "inform" in there. I need to give this more thought.

I am filling out an application for a class offered by the Lawrence Journal World on citizen journalism in case you are wondering why I am suddenly thinking deeply about news. I would like to be accepted because I could use all the help I can get.

Feral Hogs and Dan in the news!

I have written many times about the hogs in the valley. Someone else has taken notice of the problem. I posted a link to the Kansas City Star article last night. This morning, the Lawrence Journal World has an article, which we knew was coming.

There is a Lawrence Journal World which features a picture taken by our neighbor Chip and also quotes by Dan.

The only inaccurate part of the articles was that so many pigs were released--we doubt that many were released, they are just prolific.

Feral Hogs in the news

The Sunday edition of the Kansas City Star had an article about the feral hogs in Kansas and Missouri. Read it here.
