Back to the Back Roads

I am now a certified instructor in the postal service.

I have never stood in front of a group and presented using power point. I decided to step outside my comfort level and try a simple addition to my presentation today. I spent at least two hours last night working up what I thought was a nice little slide show. When we drew the numbers for order this morning, I was first. I was in such a hurry getting everything set up, I didn't take the time to preview it using the projector.

The camera was turned on (yes, they videoed us) I did my introduction, flipped on the projector and it didn't fit on the screen provided. What a disappointment--all my hard work for not. Oh well, I did have a backup plan and I didn't loose many points.

Tomorrow, its back to the route. It's been two weeks. I am looking forward to seeing my friends at the post office and even hitting the road again.

Presentation Skills

is the name of the class I am involved in here in Omaha. Skills is an appropriate word because I believe presenting before a group is a skill and being really good at it is a gift.

I will say my assessment of my own ability is maybe a B-. Maybe just a little above average. I do not feel the sound of my voice is pleasing and I am a bit "dutchy." I have too much of a Midwestern way of putting "en" at the end of words.

I don't know if there is a correlation or not, but good singers are often good speakers. Maybe their voice sounds more on key or more pleasing to the ear. My fellow rural carrier who is taking the course with me used to be a radio announcer. He is excellent so my craft is well represented.

There is always a surprise in a group like this. One member in particular was very quiet and did not seem too confident in the group. Today we did our first graded presentations. His was very good, actually one of the best. You never know how people will preform in front of a group.

Omaha

This post is coming from Omaha Nebraska. I am here for three days training for a postal service detail I do along with my rural route duties.

Our meeting is near the Old Market District. This is an old farmer’s market area that has been brought back to life with restaurants and quaint shops. Last night I wanted a birthday gift for our Colorado grandboy and found a toy shop tucked in a corner of the downstairs walkway. Tonight I was able to find a simple black t-shirt in a shop that specialized in selling clothing with Nebraska Bug Eaters ( the Cornhuskers original name).

I also drove by the Qwest Center, a beautiful facility that is probably spurring Kansas City to build the Sprint Center.

After eight hours sitting in a training room, it has been walking around the Old Market District for a short time, grabbing something to eat and coming back to the hotel room. If I had more time I would want to see the Henry Doorly Zoo, the Western Historic Trails Center, check out Creighton University, where our daughter received her DPT degree, Durham Western Heritage Museum and Joslyn Art Museum..

Omaha might be a well kept secret

Snorkeling in crystal clear waters. We felt like we could reach out and touch the fish.

Everything they say about the food is true!

Watching the sun set over the ocean was a daily ritual for me.

We are Home!

What a day yesterday. We went to bed Friday night having spent the day by the pool and using sunscreen to waking up Saturday morning to cooler, but still weather in the 50s at our port in Galveston, Texas. It was downhill from there. By the time we arrived home last night--actually this morning at 1:30 am-- we had gone through rain, ice and snow packed roads.

Even though the trips down and back were somewhat tedious, it was worth it to have a few days respite from the winter. I am still getting organized here at home, but check back this evening. I will put up pictures and more comments about the cruise.
